The course analyses the fundamental elements of a numerical transmission system, from the description of analog-digital and digital-analog conversion to the study of the principal baseband (pulse amplitude modulation) and bandpass (digital modulation) transmission systems. The course includes practice exercise sessions in the classroom and laboratory sessions using simulator software.

Elaborazione e Trasmissione Immagini [Prof. Francesco De Natale]

The course analyses the main aspects of a processing, storing and trasmission system of multimedia signals. In the first part of the course, fundamentals of signal processing in the numeric domain are studied. Then, numerical images and related problems are considered, like acquisition, A/D conversion, color representation. Moreover, image processing techniques based on histogram, calibration and geometrical correction are presented, as well as segmentation and image characterization methods. Finally, the problem of image storage is analyzed, introducing the most common methodologies and standards (JPEG, JPEG2000).

Comunicazioni Multimediali [Prof. Francesco De Natale, Prof. Nicola Conci]

The course provides the basic notions as well as a set of application cases related to the technologies for the acquisition, processing, archiving and transmission of multimedia signals and their use in complex multimedia systems.Every topic is first introduced in the class from a theoretical viewpoint and then experienced in the lab by means of software simulation tools.The first part of the course introduces the basic concepts of digital signal processing (sampling, quantization, numerical transmission, frequency-domain representation, stochastic signals).The following part addresses the characterization of one- and multi-dimensional signals (sound, images, video), with particular reference to the problems related to the acquisition, AD conversion and representation of media objects. Then, the basic techniques of image and video processing are reviewed (filtering, description, analysis). Finally, the problem of multimedia signal representation and coding is presented making reference to the most common standard in the field (ISO and ITU coding families).The last part of the course proposes a set of application scenarios in specific areas of multimedia, also involving companies through dedicated seminars.

Probabilità e Statistica [Prof.ssa Giulia Boato]

Introduction to probability and to statistics, as tools to understand non-deterministic phenomena. The course program consists of basic principles of probability. This course is introductory and aims at presenting methodologies for interpreting with probability phenomenas of causal nature. The course focus on general theoretical concepts and practical techniques, and aims at providing the student with good knowledge of how to use basic probability concepts.

Multimedia Data Security [Prof.ssa Giulia Boato]

Nowadays great facility to access information implies the need to study data protection techniques. The objective of the course is the investigation of some methodologies which guarantee secure access to multimedia data, through various data hiding and digital forensics techniques. The student at the end of the course will know a series of state-of-art methodologies for the active and passive forensics analysis of multimedia data and he/she will know how to apply them to digital images in simple scenarios.

Computer Vision & Multimedia Analysis [Prof. Nicola Conci]

The course aims to provide the student with an in-depth overview on the methods of analysis and management of multimedia data. In the first part of the course, starting from the basics of image and video processing, the course will focus on the problems of motion modeling and detection, motion tracking, and object recognition, both by using monocular and multi-view systems.

The second part of the course will address the topics of multimedia data management, with particular reference to the transmission and compression of audio / video signals.
